An operator and a satellite constellation launched a satellite-to-phone service in the Democratic Republic of Congo, reported as the first commercial direct-to-cell service in Africa. It reaches ordinary handsets without additional hardware, which is what distinguishes it from the satellite broadband already licensed across the continent.
